Creative Labs Xmod Wireless Music System with X-Fi Technology Customer Reviews
This this is nothing shy of spectacular. Don’t be tricked by poor reviews, as the troubles described within are readily circumvented by simply reading the incredibly simple directions. All necessary cables were included, and the Y-plug (3.5 mm to stereo) designed for stereo input has gold connections – most people agree these make little difference for the vast majority of users, but this is an instance where Creative went the extra mile and did not have to.
I have a reasonably simple stereo system setup: a ten year old low-end sony receiver and four Cambridge soundworks speakers with a small sub; I’m limited to stereo inputs on the back of the machine and did not want 50 feet of 3.5 mm extension cable running dangerously through my apartment to connect computer sound to stereo. Creative has marketed this product such that you can simply plug it in and it will start broadcasting music.
They are absolutely right,
and it works flawlessly (so long as you ensure that the transmitter is the necessary 10 feet from your wireless router at minimum, AND so long as your wireless router is powered up FIRST – this thing has a wireless “sniffer” and will shift to another channel when it detects other wireless signals). I literally plugged it in, and within about 30 seconds (with no internet at the time; the drivers were installed directly from the device when connected by USB) it was ready. The receiver was incredibly easy to set up (power plug and audio output connections), and the sound quality is nothing shy of amazing. There are even headphone jacks on the front of both the transmitter and receiver for a few extra options – sounds like a passthrough for speakers so you can both listen and broadcast at the source to me. It also appears that creative sells a version of the transmitter with an iPod dock, which may be useful for some. It took more time to open the box and unpack the thing than it did to get it up and running.
I have personally tested the transmitter on both Windows XP Media Center Edition.32 and Windows 7 Pro.64 with zero problems – it happily sings on a four year old Dell desktop (with somewhat-exotic audio guts) and from a much more modern laptop. I love this thing. My big complaint is that I am having trouble finding more receivers, although most likely Creative’s current receiver model is compatible (email answer pending). If you are looking for an easy wireless music option, this can and will very quickly become your favorite toy. Whatever it is Creative has done inside these small devices (each about the size of a paperback laying flat) is perfect for the average user. I look forward to adding receivers and pumping music into my kitchen and my office in addition to my living room
