Apple’s MacBook Air will soon be challenged on its super-slimness, by Windows-powered computers from Asus, Acer and MSI that may lack Apple’s aluminum-cased pizazz, but will cost a lot less. August 31st, 2009I-Swarm, real micro-sized robots!
August 31st, 2009These tiny I-Swarm (Intelligent Small-World Autonomous Robots for Micro-manipulation) robots are incredibly neat! They move by using a piezoelectric transducer to vibrate across a surface in a manner similar to a bristlebot, only controllable. Because they are vibrating at audible frequencies, they also produce pleasant sounds as they move about. Someone should choreograph a tiny performance for them! Birthday cannon
August 31st, 2009Happy birthday, here’s your cannon … @ Dailymail Mike Daugherty asked his 11-year-old son Logan what he wanted for his birthday. The boy said, “I want a cannon.” Dad didn’t scoff at Logan’s request by saying, “How about a hippopotamus instead,” as a Christmas song from another era lamented. No, Daugherty is not that kind of guy. He granted his son’s wish and built him a Civil War-era cannon not a model, the real deal. A pawful of quick Snow Leopard tips
August 31st, 2009Filed under: OS , Software , TUAW Tips , Snow Leopard As all of us are starting to get familiar with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, we’re starting to find little features that aren’t immediately visible and are pretty cool! My first surprise came when one application asked me to make sure that my date and time settings were correct. I dutifully popped into System Preferences, clicked on the Date & Time preferences pane, clicked on the Time Zone tab, and noticed a couple of things that w

August 31st, 2009Edward Hausner/The New York TimesOn Aug. 31, 1969, New York City buses began requiring exact change. A day earlier, passengers boarded a crosstown bus on 42nd Street, heading east toward the United Nations, as someone up front got change from the driver. Before the MetroCard, before the old two-tone token, when fares were just 20 cents, New York City bus drivers did something that today seems almost remarkable. They gave change. For example, in case the self-explanatory nature of the concept has er
